Being added to the sex offender registry can be one of the most devastating consequences for someone convicted of a sex crime. Registration is more than just an inconvenience; it can have life-altering consequences that limit your personal freedoms and hinder your ability to make a living.
The Sex Offender Registry in Colorado is a database maintained by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and contains information about individuals convicted of certain sex crimes in the state. This information may include your name, address, date of birth and the crime you were convicted of that triggered your sex offender registration requirement.
Sex offender registration can result from a wide range of offenses, including the following:
- Sexual assault — This crime involves non-consensual sexual intrusion or penetration. Depending on the victim’s age and whether the defendant had a weapon, you could face up to 48 years in prison in addition to registering as a sex offender.
- Enticement of a child — This crime involves luring a child under 15 years of age into a situation for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity. Depending on the circumstances, a conviction may carry up to 32 years in prison in addition to registering.
- Unlawful sexual contact — Any sexual contact where the defendant knows the alleged victim does not consent is defined as unlawful sexual contact. If convicted, you can be sentenced to up to 16 years in prison. Depending on the circumstances, lifetime sex offender registration is a possibility.
- Aggravated incest — Aggravated incest is defined as sexual contact with a biological child, stepchild, or child by adoption, who is under the age of 21. If convicted, you could face up to 32 years in prison, depending on the circumstances of your case. You could also be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of your life.
Other convictions that require sex offender registry include the following:
- Sexual assault on a child
- Sexual assault on a child by a psychotherapist
- Patronizing a child of prostitution
