The most common types of crime in Colorado are property crimes and violent crimes.
Property crimes
Property crime makes up 87 percent of all crimes committed in Colorado. As of 2019 the statewide property crime rate was 2,591 incidents per 100,000 residents. This puts Colorado at No. 13 in state property crime overall. Among these property crimes, the most prevalent in Colorado were:
- Larceny ― This is a broad category of crimes for the theft of personal property. Larceny constituted approximately 72 percent of all property crimes in the state.
- Burglary― This is unlawful entry into a dwelling or building for the purpose of committing other crimes.
- Motor vehicle theft― Colorado ranked second highest in the nation for automobile theft.
Violent crimes
At 381 incidents per 100,000 residents, violent crime in Colorado constituted approximately 13 percent of all criminal activity in the state. Colorado ranked 30th in violent crime, somewhat lower than the national average. Among violent crimes, these were the most common ones committed in the state:
- Aggravated assault ― An aggravated assault involves the offender using a deadly weapon and/or causes the victim severe bodily harm.
- Robbery ― Robbery is theft by way of threats or use of force.
- Rape ― Incidents of rape in Colorado were the sixth highest in the nation.
- Murder ― The murder rate in Colorado was slightly lower than the national average.
