According to court documents, the Hallfords used the money they received to finance a lavish lifestyle, which included purchasing luxury vehicles, making cryptocurrency investments and going on extravagant trips. Under the plea agreement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado agreed not to seek sentences longer than 15 years for the couple.
Along with their federal conviction for financial misconduct, the Hallfords are also facing serious state fraud allegations related to their cremation services. According to the charges, the Return to Nature owners stored nearly 200 bodies of deceased individuals that had been transferred to them for cremation. Allegedly, the ashes the Hallfords provided to bereaved families were not those of their deceased loved ones, violating the trust and dignity of the people who paid for their services.
Though the details associated with the Hallfords’ case might be unique, fraud prosecutions for the alleged misuse of pandemic relief money are extremely common. In fact, the Department of Justice has a task force dedicated solely to this issue. Since its establishment, more than 3,500 defendants have been charged criminally and over $1.4 billion has been recovered.
